Tech Tip of the Month: Networking DocMagic for Windows

Have you ever wondered why multiple computers in your office can run DocMagic but you do not have the ability to see each other's data? Well this month's Tech Tip covers just that. The default installation for DocMagic for Windows is stored locally on your hard drive. Once DocMagic has been installed, you cannot share any data amongst other DocMagic for Windows users on other machines. This may result in significant time loss across all users when entering brokers, alternate lenders, service providers, loan reps, etc., into the systems database and can be otherwise avoided if DocMagic is installed instead on a shared network drive.

To set DocMagic for Windows up on a network, you will need a Windows NT, 2000 or 2003 server. The installation of DocMagic must be run on the server and not from a client machine. Once you've established that you have the proper server, then just follow the easy steps below:

  1. Install DocMagic to a Local Drive on the server. It is best to install DocMagic into a folder that is tied to an existing share so as to minimize the need for mapping new network drives. For example, if you have a folder named APPS that is shared on your D:\ drive simply install to D:\APPS\DSI\.
  2. Next, you may need to install the LinearHash service if it isn't listed as a running service on the server after the DocMagic installation is complete. Check the computer management console services section for the LinearHash service. If it isn't listed, stop here and contact the DSI Technical Support Department to obtain the service. If the service is listed and running, proceed to the next step.
  3. Verify that all users that will be using DocMagic have Full Control of the DSI folder and all subfolders and files in the security settings for the DSI folder. Additionally, add the SYSTEM user to the list of users with Full Control of the DSI folder. You are now ready to begin the Client Installations on the workstations that will be using DocMagic.
  4. Ensure that each client station has a mapped drive to the network share where the DocMagic files reside on the server. Using the example above, the workstation should be mapped to the APPS folder. Also, be sure to use the same drive letter for each client workstation that will be running DocMagic for ease of troubleshooting. Once the mapped drive is set up, you are ready to run the client installations.
  5. To perform the client install, open up the folder where DocMagic is installed via Windows Explorer or My Computer and browse to the Client Install folder. There you will find the DMW32Client.exe file. Run this file on each workstation to automatically install and configure the DocMagic for Windows client. A new shortcut will be placed in the All Users\Desktop folder, thus displaying the DocMagic for Windows shortcut for all users that use this workstation.

Launch DocMagic by double-clicking the shortcut and set up a new user for each client. Your users are now ready to start using DocMagic for Windows.
