Maryland Revised Notary Law Becomes Effective

The State of Maryland recently enacted a new notary law that allows remote online notarizations (“RONs”) under Senate Bill 678.  The new law replaces the existing temporary authority allowed under the governor’s Emergency Order 20-03-30-04 allowing remote notarizations during the COVID pandemic.  The new law and its requirements are effective as of October 1, 2020.

DocMagic is updating our Maryland forms as of the effective date to include either a new electronic acknowledgment certificate or a standard, in person ink certificate based on the document request.  The notary certificate text for an acknowledgment has been modified by the new law to be simpler and more straightforward.

DocMagic’s electronic notary certificate (for use with RON and IPEN) will include optional postfill for a remote notary to include the required RON language: “This notarial act involved a remotely located individual and the use of communication technology.”.
